“The future
Parkway Baptist Church was established on February 21, 1976 under the vision
of six men and by the leadership of the Holy Spirit. The first service was
held at the Pit Stop on Mayhaw Drive, where the name Parkway was selected on
March 27, 1976.
On September 25,
1977, Parkway Baptist Mission was incorporated with 232 Charter Members into
a New Testament Church under the moderation of Pastor E.P. Hardin of Uvalde
Baptist Church. The first pastor of Parkway Baptist Church was Paul
Stephenson, who moved to Houston in July of 1977. June 1978 was a watershed
month as Parkway became a sponsoring church for a mission in Kings Lake
Forest subdivision. Tracy and Rhonda Hearnsberger were called as the mission
leaders.
Pastor Frank
Biles followed Bro. Paul in leading the church through the ‘oil bust’ of the
mid-eighties, and was succeeded by Dr. George Miller in the late eighties.
The church was then blessed with Pastor Dane Fowlkes, who led the church to
great growth and outreach until the church was blessed with the opportunity
to commission Bro. Dane and his wife Gina as missionaries to Africa. Jim
Townsend followed Dane as pastor, where his generous spirit led the church
to giving one of the largest Lottie Moon Christmas offerings ever collected.
Our sixth pastor
– Elbert White – was called in
December
1999 after many years of missionary service in Africa, Southern Asia, and
Panama. Bro. White stood firm with the church through Tropical Storm
Allison, leading us in a time of great property loss for both the church and
the community. We were blessed to have Bro. White with us until he retired.
Parkway Baptist
Church called our current pastor, John Swann, in January 2008, and look
forward to the opportunities to serve the Lord and reach the world in the
coming years.”
